I joined the One Room Challenge this fall and completely transformed my primary bedroom. We moved to Kansas five months ago so my husband could attend law school, and we are ballin' on a budget. Picture frame moulding is a classic design element that adds depth, texture, and a high-end look to your walls, and it is very budget-friendly, so I decided to use it in our primary bedroom makeover. Installing it yourself can be a fun and rewarding DIY project that elevates your space without needing a complete renovation. In this post, I’ll take you through the tools, materials, and steps to achieve professional-looking results.

Why Picture Frame Moulding?

Before diving into the how-to, let’s discuss why you might want to add picture frame moulding to your space. This architectural feature can:

  • Add visual interest to plain walls.

  • Create the illusion of higher ceilings.

  • Enhance the overall design of your room with a timeless look.

  • Offer a designer-approved finish on a budget.

Materials Needed

Before you start, gather the following tools and materials:

Step 1: Plan Your Layout

Begin by planning your layout. Measure the height and width of your wall and decide how many frames you want to install. Here are some tips:

  • Pro tip: Start with larger, evenly spaced frames if you're a beginner. As you gain confidence, you can create more intricate designs.

  • Decide on the spacing between the frames and the distance from the ceiling, floor, and corners.

  • Symmetry is key to achieving a polished, professional look.

Step 2: Mark the Frame Locations

Use a pencil, tape measure, and level to mark where the frames will go on the wall lightly. Ensure the lines are level, as this will determine the overall appearance.

  • Pro Tip: Create a template using painter’s tape to visualize the frames on the wall before you commit to cutting.

Step 3: Cut the Moulding

Cut the moulding to the lengths needed for each side of the frame using a miter saw. You’ll need to cut the ends at a 45-degree angle to fit together perfectly at the corners.

  • Safety tip: Always wear safety goggles and use caution when handling power tools.

  • Pro Tip: Measure twice, cut once! Precision is key when it comes to achieving a tight, seamless fit.

Step 4: Attach the Moulding

Now it's time to attach the moulding to the wall:

  • Place the moulding along your pencil marks.

  • Use a nail gun to secure the moulding in place. If you don’t have a nail gun, a hammer and finishing nails will work just as well.

  • Pro tip: Use a level to ensure each piece is perfectly straight.

Step 5: Hammer in Nails and Fill the Holes

Once the moulding is attached, you must punch nails and fill and sand the holes.

  • Use a nail puncher and hammer in any nails that are sticking out.

  • Fill any holes with wood filler or Vinyl Spackling Paste. This step helps create a smooth, professional look.

  • Sand the areas where holes were filled to ensure the picture frame moulding is smooth again.

  • Pro Tip: For a flawless finish, let the wood filler or Vinyl Spackling Paste dry completely before sanding it smooth.

Step 6: Caulk the Edges

Caulking the edges of the moulding where it meets the wall will give you that seamless, high-end finish. Apply a small bead of caulk and smooth it out with your finger or a caulk finishing tool.

  • Pro tip: Use baby wipes to wipe off any excess caulk.

Step 7: Paint

Once the caulk and wood filler are dry, it's time to paint.

  • You can paint the moulding the same color as the wall for a subtle, elegant look.

  • Use a high-quality brush or foam roller for a smooth finish.

  • Pro Tip: Use a Graco Magnum X5 Electric TrueAirless Sprayer for a flawless finish.

  • Don’t forget to touch up any areas where nails or seams are visible.

Installing picture frame moulding is an affordable way to transform a room and give it a designer feel. Whether you’re adding it to a hallway, dining room, or bedroom, the key to success is in the details. Take time to measure, cut, and install carefully; your walls will thank you!

FAQs:

1. Can I install picture frame moulding on textured walls? Yes, picture frame moulding works well with smooth or textured walls.

2. Do I need a miter saw, or can I use a different tool for the cuts? While a miter saw is the best option for clean, precise cuts, you can also use a miter cutting pliers if you don’t have access to power tools.

3. How long does this project take? The time it takes depends on the size of the room and your experience level. For a small room, expect the project to take about a weekend from start to finish.
